I’ve gotten a lot of confusion lately about lifestyle sessions. When I ask people if they’d prefer an outdoor session, studio session, or a lifestyle session, I typically get a deer in headlight stare followed by, “Uhh….outdoor I think?” Lifestyle sessions are definitely on the up and up in photography and they happen to be my very favorite type of session so I’m going to address some of the questions I frequently get asked about them so you can make an informed decision on what type of session you want to invest in.
Q: So, what is a lifestyle session?
A: Simply put, a lifestyle session is a session that tells your story. This usually (but doesn’t have to) takes place in your home. When I’m behind the lens during your lifestyle session, I will constantly be asking myself, “How do I tell this family’s story?” I’ll look for those moments that capture how you interact, smile at, and play with each other. I tend to do less posing and more playing. Don’t worry, though, I’ll get the posed shots as well. When I wrap up the session and deliver it to you, my main goal is for you to say to yourself, “Yes! That’s US! That’s who we are when no one else is around.”
Q: What do we wear for a lifestyle session?
A: Anything you want! As always, coordinating (not matching) clothes are the best. Look for a similar color pallete and try to keep it more on the neutral side. I want the focus to be on YOU rather than your wardrobe. I always prefer lifestyle session apparel to be at least somewhat comfy. You won’t look relaxed if all you can focus on is how itchy or tight your clothes are. One more tip is to wear colors that would work great on display with your home decor! After all, these images will be hanging up in your home!
Q: My home is a disaster! I would never want it on display!
A: Whose home isn’t?! Ha! Way to be real and actually live in and enjoy your home! When I’m doing a lifestyle session, I’ll do my best to avoid clutter. I’ll watch my angles, focusing in on your family and your faces rather than the tupperware drawer your toddler just emptied. You don’t have to have an immaculate home for a lifestyle session- all you need is a loving family.
Q: My home is dark, small, and generally not magazine worthy. I wish it would work for a lifestyle session, but it just won’t!
A: There is no home out there that won’t work for a lifestyle session. The beauty of light is that it’s everywhere- you just have to find it. I’ll scope your house out before the session, find the rooms that have lighting that will work, and we’ll hone in on those areas. You’ll be amazed what type of hidden beauty is in your home just waiting for someone to discover it.
Q: Your lifestyle sessions are 60-90 minutes long! How would there be enough variety for an entire session in my home?
A: We’ll add variety by visiting different rooms, playing different games, watching your kiddos do their thing so I can capture what life actually looks like in your home. If you’d like to spice it up a bit, you can have an activity ready for me to capture. Maybe your favorite board game, a cookie baking activity, or building a fort out of sheets! Weather permitting, we could even head out into your yard to get some shots of your family playing. The sky truly is the limit in a lifestyle session.
Q: What’s the point of a lifestyle session? I just don’t understand why I’d want pictures of my family inside my home- there are so many better places I can think of to take pictures!
A: It’s simple. Kids grow. They change. They don’t want to snuggle eventually. They no longer ask for piggy back rides or to dance with you in the living room. Baking with mom might someday turn into a chore. There will eventually be a last book you’ll read to them, a last time you tuck them in, and a final kiss goodnight. They’ll grow up and out. And all you’ll have left is the memories. Unfortunately, the walls of your home can’t talk and tell the stories, but the images you’ll hold in your hands after the session will tell your story over and over again so you’ll never forget what life was like.
I hope that answered some of your questions! If you have anymore, feel free to email me or send me a message on Facebook! And if you want to book a lifestyle session, I’d love to chat with you about what that will look like in your particular home with your sweet family.
